NAMCS/NHAMCS. NAMCS/NHAMCS data elements describe environment, population characteristics, health behaviors, and outcomes. The NAMCS contains information about patient age, gender, medical conditions (CP), insurance type, and physician orders for ancillary services, results of some laboratory tests, equipment, biometrics, and medications. The NAMCS is designed to provide information about the provision and use of ambulatory medical care in the US, and is based on a randomly selected sample of office-based physicians. The physicians provide data on approximately 30 patient visits during a randomly selected 1-week reporting period. Information is collected on an annual basis, and is cross-sectional.
The NHAMCS contains information about patient age, gender, ethnicity, residence type, medical conditions (ICD-9 Codes), complaints, insurance type, and physician orders for ancillary services and durable medical equipment, laboratory tests, medical procedures, biometrics, and medication. The NHAMCS collects data on utilization and provision of services in hospital emergency and outpatient departments, including ambulatory surgery locations. The sample includes about 500 hospitals randomly selected to create a nationally representative sample. Data are collected over a randomly selected 4-week period. Information is collected on an annual basis, and is cross-sectional.
Data is aggregated and reports are generated by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) for both sources of data. Public data files are available for download at the NAMCS/NHAMCS website with masked sample design variables. Restricted use data files with additional variables are also available to researchers who obtain approval from NCHS Research Data Center. Given the sampling methodology and file construction, expertise in survey data analysis and statistical programming is needed. A diagnosis of CP is identifiable by ICD-9 codes. No information is available about functional abilities of the patients or physical therapy, only prescribed therapy services and durable medical equipment. In 2012, NAMCS reported 17,356 physical therapy orders from the approximately 9,000 participating physicians, accounting for about 1.9% of all orders. Future inquires could use the NAMCS/NHAMCS to describe frequency of or changes in rates of physician orders for physical therapy for children with CP.
