The KID. The KID includes data elements that describe environment, population characteristics, health behavior and outcomes of children during an inpatient hospital stay. The database includes more than 100 clinical and nonclinical data elements for each hospital stay including: primary (CP) and secondary diagnoses and procedures, discharge status, patient demographics (e.g., gender, age, race, median income for zip code), hospital characteristics (e.g., ownership, size, teaching status, Census region and division), expected payment source, total charges, length of stay, and severity and comorbidity measures. The KID includes data elements that capture the ICD-9 codes for chronic conditions, such as CP, and also document use of PT services while in the hospital.
KID data are cross-sectional, and are available every three years from 1997 (including 22 States) to 2012 (including 44 States). The KID is the largest publicly available all-payer pediatric inpatient care database in the US. It contains data from approximately 3 million pediatric discharges each year, and estimates roughly 7 million hospitalizations. The 2012 KID includes a sample of 10% normal newborns and 80% of pediatric discharges from 4,100 hospitals. Physical therapy service utilization could be derived from billing codes. The KID can be purchased online from the HCUP; online training and a data use agreement are required. Murphy et al. ADDIN EN.CITE Murphy200616716716717Murphy, N. To date, the KID has not been used in any analysis that describes children with CP and PT utilization. Future inquires might investigate PT utilization for newborns for intracranial hemorrhage, prematurity, or other birth complications.
